I've used Tether for nearly two years on my BlackBerry Tour 9630 and been relatively happy with it. Although the speed is barely better then dialup, at least I can have internet access during my hour long train commute.
Earlier this week I noticed the Tether versions (on both the BB and Windows) which I had been successfully running during that time were quite old and so took a chance on updating them (to v1.4.5.0 on the BB and v1.4.3.7 on the Desktop).
Now I'm wishing I hadn't!!! Unfortunately I don't recall what the older versions were, nor do I know how to get an older version re-installed on my phone. What happens now is the Packet Sent / Received count as displayed in Tether (on both the BB side and Windows side) shows steadily increasing numbers, but I have *NO* internet access!?!
Doing an IPCONFIG /ALL shows:
Ethernet adapter Tether Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Tether Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 02-50-F2-00-00-01
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.25.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.25.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
What's weird is I can't PING either the Default Gateway or the DNS Servers addresses? Nor can I do an NSLOOKUP? Since NSLOOKUP fails, I can't access any websites by name - which doesn't really matter because I can't PING any of them by IP Address anyway?
I've made sure the Windows firewall is disabled for the Tether Connection so that shouldn't be the problem. And I've temporarily disabled the McAfee anti-virus while troubleshooting so that shouldn't be the problem either.
I have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed and have tried installing both versions of Tether (Setup and SetupDrv), but still no difference.
What else can I check?

Well I think I fixed this myself!!!
After uninstalling v1.4.3.7 from the Desktop (then rebooting) and reinstalling v1.4.3.7 back on the Desktop, the Packet Sent / Received count did its typical slow incrementing - but I *still* didn't have internet access nor could I ping any sites by name or IP Address.
So then I deleted v1.4.5.0 on the BB (pulling the battery afterwards to force a reboot), then re-installed the much older yet obviously more stable v1.1.0.4 (from http://tether.com/t/backups/1.1.0.4/tether.jad).
Upon relaunching v1.1.0.4 I ignored the automatic request to upgrade and my internet access was back (hurray)!!! Feeling cocky I shutdown Tether on both the Desktop and the BB and restarted them both (Desktop first of course then on the BB). This time I accepted the offer to upgrade Tether on the BB to v1.4.5.0 and once again it was borked?!?
So one more time I deleted v1.4.5.0 from the BB and did another battery pull, then reinstalled v1.1.0.4 on the BB (from the above link), and everything is once again all better. In fact I'm writing this right now over my Tether connection.
The lesson here is that v1.4.5.0 has issues (at least on my BB Tour 9630). I guess from now on I'll be much more wary when Tether offers an update. Just goes to show that newer isn't always better.
